Mary D. Warner, age 90 of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by family Dec. 20, 2016, at Riverview Manor Apartments in Sauk Centre.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 1 p.m. Dec. 27, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation was from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Upper Gathering Room in Sauk Centre.
Mary Dorothy Chisholm was born Feb. 9, 1926, in Sauk Centre to Kenneth Donald and Ida Elizabeth (Kiffmeyer) Chisholm. Following high school, she began studying to become a nurse in Duluth, and completed her Licensed Practical Nurse program in St. Cloud. On Dec. 20, 1945, Mary was united in marriage to her husband, Charles P. “Chuck” Warner in Villard. She was the proud mother of three children.
Her first nursing job was in the St. Michael’s Hospital in Sauk Centre. As the children grew up and attended school, she continued to work as a nurse. For a period of time, she also worked as a clerk in the local Ben Franklin store. In 1968, their family moved to Arizona where Mary worked at the Yavapai Community Hospital, Yavapai Community Clinic and later at Whipple VA Hospital from where she would retire. When Mary begin to have serious health concerns, she and Chuck chose to move back to Sauk Centre, to be close to family and friends. Quilting, sewing, fishing, camping and playing cards or dice were some of her favorite pastimes. She was a whiz at completing any type of word or jigsaw puzzle. Spending time with her family and participating at church were her priorities. She also enjoyed visiting and staying connected with friends throughout the countryside.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and the American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary as well as the VFW Post Auxiliary in Osakis.
Survivors include her children, Dorothy (Tom) Sills of Sauk Centre, John (Carol) Warner of Upsala and Nancy (Fred) Theis of Sauk Centre; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Catherine Lindholm Talborg and Bette (Tom Limberis) Chisholm, all of Minneapolis; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Charles P. Warner on Nov. 28, 1992; grandsons, John C. Warner, Jr. and Johnny Ray Sills; and her parents, Kenneth and Ida Chisholm.
Serving as casket bearers were Charles Theis, Curtis Theis, Chrissy Cleveland, Charity Reger, Cari Warner, Johnna Warner and Wendy Sills Middendorf with Cathie Rainier, Justin Warner, Ashley Warner, Jennifer Warner and Karen Warner Rahn acting as honorary casket bearers. Cross bearer was Austin Middendorf with Jesse Sills as Scripture bearer. Serving as gift bearers were Calvin Theis, Ashland Theis and Bo Cleveland. Kathy Krebsbach read the scriptures and Cathie Rainier prayed the petitions.

Charles “Chuck” F. Reynolds, age 90 of Sauk Centre, died Dec. 24, 2016, at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, with his family at his side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Sudhansu officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church Upper Gathering Room prior to the funeral mass.
Charles Francis Reynolds was born Jan. 27, 1926, in Willmar, the son of Thomas Patrick and Sarah Alice (Tuggle) Reynolds. As a young man, Chuck served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. On Oct. 30, 1948, Chuck was united in marriage to Norma Jean Novak and they had three children, Janet, Sandra and Chuck. Chuck worked as a grocer his entire career and owned and operated the Red Owl Grocery Store in Sauk Centre for some time. He was widowed in 1970. In 1973, he married Marian S. (Wiener) Schlotfeldt, who had four children, Brenda, Bryan, Beth and Barb. Chuck and Marian enjoyed spending time with their blended family. For 20 years, they also were volunteer drivers for Tri-Cap in Stearns County. Marian preceded him in death on Sept. 16, 2014.
Charles was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.
Survivors include his blended family, Janet (Lynn) Engle, Sandra (Barry) Evans, Brenda (Kevin McCauley) Fiereck, Bryan (Teresa) Schlotfeldt, Chuck (Debi) Reynolds, Beth (Dan) Watson and Barb (Duane) Pettit; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Norma Reynolds and Marian Reynolds; one grandson; his parents; and three brothers, Tom Reynolds, George Reynolds and Edward “Teddy” Reynolds.
Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Tim Engle, Chris Engle, Jeremy Evans, Ken Reynolds, Nathan Reynolds, Cole Watson and Daniel Pettit. Stacy Evans will serve as cross bearer while Danielle Kreemer is the Bible bearer for the funeral mass. Brittany Pettit will read the scripture readings and pray the petitions. Meghan Reiman and her family will present the communion gifts during the funeral Mass.
A contribution made to Catholic Charities in Chuck’s honor is a wonderful way to commemorate his life.

Thomas J. “Tom” Arvig, age 74 of Melrose, died Dec. 22, 2016, at his home on Big Birch Lake.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers were held at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Thomas Joseph Arvig was born Jan. 30, 1942, in St. Cloud, to Leonard H. and Marie (Stundebeck) Arvig. Tom graduated from Melrose High School and attended St. John’s University. He was united in marriage to Emily Berscheit on Dec. 1, 1977, in Las Vegas. Tom lived on Big Birch Lake his entire married life. As a teenager, Tom started working in the family business, the Melrose Telephone Company; a family-owned company for over 80 years. He retired as president of the company in 2010. Tom loved to travel, and was an accomplished private pilot, with over 4,000 hours of logged flight time. Tom’s generosity was well known by all who knew him.
Survivors include his son, Scott (Sara) Arvig of Grey Eagle; daughter, Elisabeth Arvig Kuhns (significant other, David Thorson) of Melrose; and seven grandchildren, Vanessa, Victoria and Alexander Kuhns, and Myra, Silas, Claire and Lynn Arvig.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Arvig, on May 18, 2012; son, Blain Arvig on May 18, 2012; parents, L.H. and Marie Arvig; and grandson, Leo Arvig.

Herman Joseph Hammel

The Mass of Christian Burial for Herman Hammel, of Sauk Centre and formerly of Bertha, was celebrated at 11 a.m. on Dec. 27, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bertha with Father Matthew Crane as celebrant. Visitation was held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. at the Domian-Anderson Chapel in Bertha with Rosary at 5 p.m. and prayers at 6 p.m. Visitation resumed at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
Herman Joseph Hammel, formerly of Bertha, residing in Sauk Centre the past nine years, passed away on Dec. 20, 2016, at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta.
Herman was born to Renhold and Anna (Zimmerman) Hammel on Dec. 6, 1919, in the Hammel home in Dunn County, N.D. Growing up on a ranch in western North Dakota is where Herman first experienced his love for nature; from listening to the coyotes and studying the stars to riding the range as he herded sheep or rounded up the cattle. Herman loved to read and absorb knowledge and graduated from high school in Killdeer, N.D. Herman and his wife, Lois (Maroney), ranched by Dickenson before coming to Minnesota, which he thought looked like the Garden of Eden. With Lois being from Wadena, they chose to set up farming in rural Bertha, and yes, their Herefords and horses came, too.
Herman’s animals were not only part of his occupation, they were also his hobby. He was very proud to sell steers to 4-H youth and see them become Grand Champion winners. He also loved to find unique wood and carve it into wall plaques, toys, coat racks and toothpick holders. Herman was active in 4-H and as a 4-H Leader.
After Herman retired he wrote three books, “Children of the Homesteaders,” “Echoes from Yesteryears,” and “My Saddle Told Me.”
Herman’s children will say of him “the compassion, trust, humility and unconditional love that he lived, along with his faith, was so easy to see and that the best gift to all of them was how much he loved their mother.”
Herman was preceded in death by his wife Lois on Jan. 4, 1991; parents Renhold and Anna; four brothers, one sister, granddaughter Mary Kay Kieffer; and son-in-law Milton Wilson.
He is survived by his sons John Hammel of San Jose, Calif., David (Debra) Hammel of Winona, and Steven Hammel of New York City; daughters Alexia (Leo) Kieffer of Casselton, N.D., Alice Wilson and Annette (Marc) Hinnenkamp both of Sauk Centre and Mary (Kenn) Tamm of Avon; 24 grandchildren and 56 great-grandchildren; sisters Catherine Siedler of Bismarck, N.D., Clarice Guenther of Colorado Springs, Colo.; along with sister-in-law Betty Hammel of Bismarck, N.D.
Serving as pallbearers were Shawn Meyer, Claudette Schaeffer, Amy Middendorf, Ryan Tamm and Skylar Hammel.
Burial was in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Bertha.

Jacob Dale “Jake” Wolbeck, age 21 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Dec. 19, 2016.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment was held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.
Visitation was held from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Parish prayers were held at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the church.
Jacob Dale Wolbeck was born Jan. 9, 1995, in Willmar, to Duane and Gail (Clear) Wolbeck. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2013 and earned his Commercial Driver License from Alexandria Technical College. Jake purchased a house in St. Cloud and was working as a truck driver for Northern Metal Recycling.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Jake enjoyed working on his truck, using and fixing his RC cars and drones, and gaming with his brothers and cousin. He enjoyed the outdoors where he would spend time fishing, shooting clay pigeons, target practice with recurve bow, but most of all, loved spending time with his family, Chelsea, and his best friends, Justin and Travis.
Survivors include his parents, Duane and Gail Wolbeck of Melrose; long-time girlfriend, Chelsea Brunotte of St. Cloud; brothers and sister, Justin Wolbeck of Waite Park, Jessica Wolbeck of Waite Park and Joshua Wolbeck of Melrose; and many loving relatives and friends.
Jake was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Marilyn Wolbeck and Harold and Geraldine Clear; and aunt, Edith Clear Feghoul.

Shirley Wever

Shirley Wever, age 77 of Osakis passed away on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2016, at the Galeon Nursing Home in Osakis.
Shirley Ellen Kolaskie was born on Oct. 11, 1939, in Sauk Centre, to Edward and Ellen (Hess) Kolaskie. She was an only child and graduated in 1957 from Sauk Centre High School. On June 7, 1958, Shirley married the love of her life, Frank Wever, from Missouri, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. They lived and worked in Sauk Centre where Shirley ran a restaurant and Frank (along with Shirley’s parents) owned the Rambler Car Dealership. In 1962 the Wevers moved to Minneapolis where Shirley worked as a secretary/bookkeeper. In 1966, they returned to the Sauk Centre area, living on Fairy Lake. After Shirley got her broker’s license in 1970, she opened Shirley’s Realty and was one of the developers for the Linwood Resort Mobile Home Park on Lake Osakis. The Wevers resided in McAllen, Texas for two years before settling down in Kirksville, Mo. in 1989. Frank passed away in 1996. Shirley continued in the secretary position and worked up until her retirement at an accounting firm called Fitzgerald & Floyd. In 2004, Shirley moved back to Osakis. Once settled back in Osakis, she became active with the Osakis Senior Club and was president for several years. She also belonged to the Rebeka Circle at the Osakis Lutheran Church. Some of her hobbies included traveling, golfing, dancing, especially square dancing and gardening. She was always a big fan of the Sauk Centre high school basketball team. Shirley loved to socialize, play cards and make new friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and step-granddaughter, Penny Sternquist.
Shirley is survived by her stepdaughter, Barbara (Don) Sternquist of Roscoe, Ill.; a step-grandson, a step-great-grandson and a step-great-great-grandson. Also by her cousins, Patty (Ron) Johnson of Monticello, Gary (Brenda) Blombeck of Eagle Bend, Darlene Rodd of Coon Rapids, Steven (Tammy) Hess of Clear Lake and Marcia Hess of Rice, as well as many friends.

Urban H. Toenies

Urban H. “Urb” Toenies, age 96 of Freeport, died Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Urban Henry Toenies was born Nov. 1, 1920, in Millwood Township, Stearns County, to Gerhard and Wilhelmina (Steinke) Toenies. He farmed the Century Toenies Farm in Millwood Township, Stearns County all his life. His family celebrated his 96th birthday in November on the farm, and a few days later, he mowed his lawn. His enjoyment was mowing his lawn, driving around the farm in his Polaris Ranger, watching cowboy movies, playing 500 and pull tabs. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends and going out to eat.
Urb was a member of Holy Name Society and Crosier Apostolate.
Survivors include his sisters, Mary Gerads of Albany and Leona Silbernick of Little Falls; sister-in-law, Veronica Toenies of Albany; and many nieces and nephews.
Urb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Norbert and August Toenies; and sisters, Theckla Scherping, Clara Klaphake, Angeline Klasen and Adella Klasen.
Serving as casket bearers were Tom Klaphake, Mark Scherping, Gary Klasen, Denise Thrasher, Leon Toenies and Brian Silbernick. Cross bearer was Diane Scepaniak and scripture bearer was Jerry Klasen. Eucharistic Minister was Shirley Worms. Reader was Jerry Klasen and gift bearers were Ken Klaphake and Vern Klasen.

Sylvester B. Uphus

Sylvester B. Uphus
Sylvester Bernard Uphus died peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning, Jan. 1, 2017. He celebrated his 89th birthday three days before that on Dec. 29 in characteristic style, with a speech delivered by himself and a dinner for 30 attendees to follow. Hospitality was always a high value for him.
Sylvester was born to Herman and Helen Uphus on Dec. 29, 1927, in Grove Township, Stearns County. He was a WWII veteran, having enlisted at age 18 in the United States Navy. He served two years on USS Bremerton and was honorably discharged Dec. 22, 1947. He was proud of his military service and made many military friends during and after his service. After military service, Sylvester completed the ag school program at St. John’s in Collegeville. He was a lifelong active member of Knights of Columbus, VFW and American Legion.
Sylvester married Rose Goerdt on Oct. 16, 1951, at St. Paul’s Parish in Sauk Centre. He and Rose became the proud parents of 12 children, eight girls and four boys. For about 40 years Sylvester farmed north of Padua. He was always forward looking and hard-working, and farming was a rewarding success for him.
In 1982, Sylvester was elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives. He was re-elected in each of his subsequent campaigns, serving for a total of 10 years. He was popular among both constituents and legislators, often working across the political aisle to complete the work of government in a no-nonsense, common sense way.
After his legislative years, for nearly 10 years, Sylvester worked with Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance (VOCA) as an agricultural consultant. This work began with an assignment in Latvia, one of the Baltic countries, then only very recently liberated from more than a half century of USSR communist domination. He completed other VOCA assignments in former Soviet satellites, Armenia and Georgia. Sylvester also organized medicine and clothing drives for the Latvian people. He made many long-term friends in his work with VOCA, both personally and professionally. He was a traveler, most often with an assignment or a purpose. In prior and ensuing years, Sylvester’s travels took him to Russia, China, Africa, South America, Central America and other locations.
Sylvester’s family was the pride of his life. He was most happy to be asked for, and to provide, help or assistance whenever possible. He was generous with his time and talents. Sylvester left surviving his loving wife of 65 years, Rose, all 12 of his children, Deborah (Kevin) Boynton, David, Thomas (Donna), Sharon (Ken) Benson, Karen (Michael) Stack, Mark (Barbara), Mary Saxton, Peggy (Mark) Raitor, Cynthia (Arthur) Pearson, Joseph (Kate), Kathryn and Andrea; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brother, Norbert, and sisters, MaryAnn Olmschenk, Marlene Klingel and Katie Nelson. Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Helen, his brothers, Laverne and Herbert and his sister, Rosalyn Comeau.
Memorials are preferred to Holy Family School, VFW and CentraCare Hospice in Sauk Centre.

Daniel M. Welle

Daniel M. “Dan” Welle, age 85, of Sauk Centre, passed away surrounded by his family on Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017, at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Tim Wenzel officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be held at 4:30 p.m. and the veterans prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Dan was born to Leo and Barbara (Lehner) Welle on Sept. 10, 1931, in Albany. He graduated from Albany High School and attended St. Cloud State University for one year. Dan was honorably discharged having served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
Dan married Arlene Adrian on June 28, 1952, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. The couple made their home in Albany, where Dan worked in the family car dealership. In 1964 Dan and Arlene purchased the Otto Brothers Dodge dealership in Sauk Centre, where they resided and raised their five children. In 1989 he opened Dan Welle Southtown, a new facility on the south side of Sauk Centre. He served on the Chrysler Dealer Council and was named a Pentastar award-winning dealership multiple times.
Dan was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, where he served as a lector and an usher, and a member of the Bishop Busch Council 4863 Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67 and Sauk Centre Rotary Club. Dan had served on the St. Michael’s Hospital Board and was active in Boy Scouts.
Dan and Arlene enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and traveled extensively. He had hiked the Grand Canyon and was a certified scuba diver. He also enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble.
Dan’s family was the most cherished thing in his life; he was the happiest when he was surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Arlene Welle of Sauk Centre; four children, Bruce (Mickey) Welle of Sauk Centre, Joan (Lowell) Jenc of Alexandria, Brad (Sue) Welle of Roseville and Brent Welle of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter-in-law, Gail Welle of Fergus Falls; 12 grandchildren, Aaron (Alani) Welle, Jared Welle, Chrissy (Kris) Hokanson, Becky (Paul) Winters, Beth (Ira) Bradford, Lindsay (Nick) Cox, Jordan Welle, B.J. Welle, Ben Jenc, Andy Jenc, Lauren Welle and Megan Welle; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Deel Hoffman, Marian Hohman and Macky Anderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Brian Welle on Feb. 10, 2007; brothers and sisters, Roman Welle, John Welle, Evelyn Welle, Leona Ahles, Sylvester Welle and Ervin Welle.
Serving as casket bearers will be Aaron Welle, Jared Welle, Chrissy Hokanson, Beth Bradford, Ben Jenc, Andy Jenc, Lauren Welle and Megan Welle. Cross bearer will be B.J. Welle and scripture bearer will be Jordan Welle. Gift bearers will be Jordan Welle and Hailey Hokanson.
Memorials are preferred to Holy Family School in Sauk Centre and CentraCare Health Foundation in Sauk Centre.

Alcuin J. “Al” Gangl
Alcuin J. “Al” Gangl, age 90 of Melrose, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment in St. Mary’s Cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Alcuin Joseph Gangl was born March 19, 1926, in St. Francis to Michael and Hilda (Eiynck) Gangl. He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in October of 1944. On June 20, 1951, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Vogel at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Al worked as a machinist at American Hoist in St. Paul and for Flour City in Minneapolis for 30 years before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, American Legion Post 101, a lifetime member of the International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers Lodge #459, and was a generous blood donor. Al enjoyed fishing and hunting and doing yardwork, especially getting rid of the dandelions. Al was also known for being the community window cleaner in Melrose.
Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Lorraine Gangl of Melrose; children, Joleen (Mark) Schindeldecker of St. Paul Park, Ron (Sandi) Gangl of Buffalo, Shari Gangl (Russ Carlson) of St. Paul and Amy Proell of Mounds View; seven grandchildren, John, Shannon, Mary Beth, Rebecca, Dan, Russell and Kayla; seven great-grandchildren, Anthony, Deseree, Aaron, David Jr., Brooke, Emma, Meta, and Lilian; brother, Elmer Gangl of Melrose; and sisters, Marti (Roger) Doetkott of Melrose, Ida Finken of Melrose and Luella (Jim) Noren of St. Paul.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Sally, Dan, Don, Melvin, Issy, Hannah, Herman, Angie, Fron and Loretta.

Bertha T. Haskamp, age 92, of Sauk Centre, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017, at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in Saint Cloud.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Sudhansu Kumar, OSB and Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating. Interment will be in the Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10-11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. Parish prayers will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Bertha Theresa Kunstleben was born to Joseph and Margaret (Bucholz) Kunstleben on July 2, 1924, in Roscoe. On Sept. 14, 1944, Bertha was united in marriage to Raymond Gerhard Haskamp in Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Ray and Bertha lived in Sauk Centre and raised their family of four children there. She was a very hard-working woman and mother. Working first at Mickey’s Market, Bohlig Cleaners, the Jack and Jill store and in the Sauk Centre Public School laundry. In 1974, they moved to Saint Cloud to work at Saint Cloud Terrace Apartment complex as the manager caretaker of the property, retiring in 1988. She then moved back to Melrose and eventually returning to Sauk Centre where she enjoyed living at Riverview Manor.
Bertha can be remembered for the hundreds and hundreds of stocking caps she knit on her loom, crafting and creating projects with plastic canvas, playing cards, doing puzzles, find-a-word searches, and spending time with her family.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.
Bertha will be deeply missed by her children, Roger Haskamp of Saint Cloud, twins - Ron (Jan) Haskamp of Melrose and Rita (Dave) Cokely of Sauk Centre, and Rick (Diane) Haskamp of Sauk Centre; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; and one sister, Theresa Ertl of Holdingford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond G. Haskamp on Feb. 25, 1993; parents, Joseph and Margaret Kunstleben; daughter-in-law, Pauline Haskamp; granddaughter, Tina Haskamp; great-grandson, Connor Dirkes; brother, Henry Kunstleben; sisters, Alvina Barthel, Rose Wensmann, twins - Monica Olmscheid and Veronica Kamphke, Martha Kunstleben and Matilda Moonen.
Serving as casket bearers will be Jeff Haskamp, Broc Haskamp, Jay Haskamp, Charles Burgess, Todd Burgess and Cale Burgess. Cross bearer will be Lacey Cote, scripture bearer will be Alyson Dirkes and Jana Haskamp will be a picture bearer. Mark Haskamp will be the lector for the Mass. Lacey, Alyson, and Jana will be bringing up the communion gifts during Mass.

Raymond Schwegman
Raymond “Ray” Schwegman, age 83 of St. Peter, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at the Church of St. Peter, St. Peter with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be at Marysburg Catholic Cemetery. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Ray was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Melrose to Clemens and Rose (Schulzetenburg) Schwegman. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1951 and attended the Escoffier Culinary Arts School under direction of Fred Ullrick. He was united in marriage to Emily Clinton on Oct. 14, 1966, at Marysburg Catholic Church. Ray owned, operated and managed the Holiday House in St. Peter for 30 years, and managed Stoney’s in Mankato for 10 years. He loved golf and watching the Masters, traveling to visit restaurants and was known for his friendliness and his sense of humor. Ray loved to be with family and adored his puppy, Bailey. He was also a member of the Le Sueur Country Club and the Minneapolis Athletic Club.
Left to remember Ray are his wife, Emily; children: Molly (Scott) Martin, Mike (Jennifer), Amy and Katie; grandchildren: Ben, Emily and Jack Martin and John and Mary Schwegman; sisters: Sally O’Gara, Evie Botz and Lillian (Jack) Larson; sister-in-law Marilyn Schwegman and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister Marina (Richard) Proell and brothers: Don and Clancy (Joan).

Marie R. Marthaler, age 95 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017, at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Meire Grove. The St. Mary’s Society and Poor Soul’s Society will pray at 6 p.m., followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Marie Rosina Schneider was born Nov. 15, 1921, in Meire Grove, to John and Bernadine (Kerkering) Schneider. Marie attended Country School and completed through the eighth grade. She was united in marriage to Gilbert Marthaler on Sept. 10, 1946, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Gilbert and Marie made their home on a farm north of Meire Grove for 32 years, where she was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. Before her marriage, Marie was a baby nurse for area families and also worked at Weber’s Grocery in Greenwald, the Egg Plant and Schulzetenberg Hardware in Melrose. After moving to town in 1978, she served as an election judge, and cleaned at St. John’s School in Meire Grove for 16 years, retiring at age 88.
She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Society, Poor Soul’s Society, Holy Rosary Society, St. John’s Mission Group where she served as president for 30 years, and also sang in the church choir for 22 years. Marie enjoyed quilting and embroidery, working word find puzzles, playing cards and bingo, and watching game shows and baseball – especially the Minnesota Twins and the Meire Grove Grovers. She was known for her “amazing dressing” at family gatherings.
Survivors include her children, Allen (Jean) Marthaler of St. Joseph, Gary (Irene) Marthaler of Meire Grove, Jan (Chuck) Schaefer of Melrose, and Annette (Jerry) Gruber of Belgrade; nine grandchildren, Amy Trentacoste (significant other, Patrick Geislinger), Jeff Marthaler (significant other, Kate Lechner), Eric (Kayla), Kyle (Amy), and Kurt Marthaler, Nicole (Matt) Lauer and Scott (Kari) Schaefer, Steven (Kayla) and Joseph Gruber; eight great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Clara Frieler of Melrose, Ludvina Ostendorf of St. Cloud, Joe Schneider of Meire Grove, Arlene Gully of Paynseville, and Lorraine Inderrieden of St. Cloud.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Marthaler on Aug. 10, 2000; sister, Leona Schneider; and brothers, Werner, Leo and Elmer Schneider.
Serving as casket bearers will be Kyle Marthaler, Kurt Marthaler, Scott Schaefer, Jeff Marthaler, Steven Gruber and Joseph Gruber. Cross bearer will be Eric Marthaler and scripture bearer will be Nicole Lauer. Readers will be Amy Trentacoste and Nicole Lauer and gift bearers will be Kayla Marthaler, Kari Schaefer, Amy Marthaler and Kayla Gruber. Honorary bearers will be St. Mary’s Society.

Teresa R. Froseth, age 79 of Sauk Centre, passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 at CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating.
Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre.
Teresa Regine Wiener was born Sept. 29, 1937, in Sauk Centre to Frank and Rose (Haskamp) Wiener. She married Loyal A. Froseth on Aug. 22, 1959 in Osakis. Teresa worked at Schneekloth’s Locker Plant in Sauk Centre in her early years. After that, she worked at the Sauk Centre High School until her retirement. All of the kids at the school knew her as “Grandma T,” and she loved to watch all of the students play sports. Teresa was the biggest sports fan you could meet. She cheered for many Minnesota sports teams, from high school to professional. Watching her children and grandchildren’s teams were the highlight of her life.
Teresa enjoyed swimming and drinking coffee with her friends every morning. She also spent a lot of her time at the Senior Dining Site to volunteer to serve lunch.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her children, Penny (Jarmin) Henry of Sauk Centre, Patty (Kenny) Arnzen of Sauk Centre, Michael (Jackie) Froseth of Sauk Centre, Brenda (significant other, Dave Hosek) Froseth of Forest Lake and Paul (Paula) Froseth of Sauk Centre; 12 grandchildren, Dirk, Christopher, Jason and Justin Henry, Devin and Kali Arnzen, Jeran, Alexus and Coyrell Magnuson, Adam and Kyle Froseth, and Ella Froseth; four great-grandchildren, Cullen and Colie Henry and Olivia and Parker Magnuson; brothers and sisters, Paul Wiener, James Wiener, Rosemary Eveslage and Alverna Mayer; and many other nieces, nephews and relatives.
Teresa was preceded in death by her husband, Loyal Froseth, on July 3, 1998; parents, Frank and Rose Wiener; granddaughter; Erin Henry; brothers, Tony, Alphonse, Jack, Reuben and Herb Wiener; and sister, Irene Gritzmacher.
Serving as urn bearer will be Dirk Henry and cross bearer will be Alexus Magnuson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund.

Mary K. Winters, age 67 of Sauk Centre, died Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Andrew Marthaler concelebrating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Parish prayers were held at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Christian Mothers at 6 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
Mary Kay Smith was born Feb. 18, 1949, in Melrose, to Clinton and Marcella (Stein) Smith. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School and moved to Minneapolis where she worked at General Hospital as an X-ray technician. She later moved back to Sauk Centre and was united in marriage to Jim Winters on May 24, 1983, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Mary also worked at St. Michael’s Hospital and later joined her husband, Jim, working at CarQuest.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Christian Mothers, American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary and the Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 Auxiliary. Mary enjoyed going to the casino, playing bingo, helping people by serving and volunteering at the Legion, VFW and the nursing home. Her greatest enjoyment were her two nieces, Sara and Amy, and her two favorite little girls, Nora and Hazel Thompson.
Survivors include her sister, Linda (John) Klein of Melrose; step-children, Carrie (Dennis) Russ of Melrose and Pat Winters of Woodbury; step grandchildren, Logan Winters, Nathan and Georgiana Russ; nieces, Sara (fiancé, Matt Weinke) and Amy (fiancé, Shawn Meyer) Klein; brothers and sisters-in-law, John (Cathy) Winters of West Union, Ron (Nancy) Winters of Osakis, Rita Winters of Alexandria, Gary Winters of West Union and Elizabeth (Mike) Melby of Brooklyn Center.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Winters, on April 2, 2016; parents; brother, John Smith; sisters-in-law, Beverly Friedrichs and Susan Winters; brother-in-law, Richard Friedrichs.
Serving as casket bearers were Logan Winters, Nathan Russ, Matt Weinke, Shawn Meyer, Pat Winters and Mark Thompson. Cross bearer was Amy Klein and scripture bearer was Sara Klein. Lector was Jolene Nathe and honorary bearers were Doris Peterson, Barb Nathe, Joanie Mackedanz, Beverly Huot, Gail Rehm, Sara Thompson, Heidi Winters, Deb Wenninger and members of the VFW Auxiliary.

Arlene T. Niermann
Arlene Theresa Niermann, age 77, passed away at Heritage of Foley in Foley on Jan. 29, 2017. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial service will be held on Monday, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, St. Michael, with visitation one hour prior to Mass at the church.
Arlene was born on March 31, 1939, in Melrose, to Edward and Angeline (Herzog) Wessel. She graduated from Melrose High School in 1957. On June 6, 1959, Arlene married Frank Niermann. She lived in Sauk Centre for most of her life before moving to Heritage of Foley in 2014. Arlene enjoyed fishing and playing cards.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Angeline, two sisters, Marie and Anna Mae.
Survived by her husband of 57 years, Frank; daughters, Ann (Don) Jones and Michelle (Kevin) Altenhofen; four grandchildren, Tanner, Gracie, Chloe and Kira; brother, Ralph (Marlene) Wessel.

Orrin “LeRoy” Sukke

Orrin “LeRoy” Sukke, age 86 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Feb. 3, 2017.
Born in Kandota township on the family farm, he was the oldest of three children. LeRoy served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1954 in the Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict. He met Shirley Jean Dobs of Swanville and they married May 12, 1959, at First Lutheran Church Sauk Centre.
LeRoy worked road construction and on a dairy farm. He also was employed at Frigidaire in St. Cloud for over 20 years until he retired. As anyone who knew LeRoy knew, he couldn’t sit still, so he continued to work doing what he loved, mowing grass at Greenwood and Oakland Cemeteries in Sauk Centre and finally retiring in 2011.
LeRoy enjoyed spending time with his family and sitting outside on his “hill.” He loved going to auctions and finding hidden treasures. He also loved Fords, races at the speedway, cutting grass on his Dixon lawn mower and he loved his town of Sauk Centre.
He was very active at First Lutheran Church. LeRoy served as head usher and on various council committees and loved working at the church Stearns County Fair booth frying hamburgers. LeRoy was also an active member of the VFW and served on the board.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley; along with two children Lynn (Patrick) Braun of St. Paul and Larry Sukke of St. Cloud; two grandchildren, Nicole Reid of St. Paul and Charles C. Reid of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Lily Link and Olivia Reid; two siblings, Norman (Della) Sukke of Alexandria, and Donna (Slim) Ostendorf of St. Cloud; and many other loving relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Josephine Sukke.
Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church of Sauk Centre. Interment following immediately at Greenwood Cemetery. No cards will be sent.

Anne T. Walz, age 74 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

Anne Theresa Foss was born to Joseph and Margaret (Gallery) Foss on Feb. 26, 1942, in Milbank, S.D. On Nov. 3, 1962, she was united in marriage to Roy George Walz at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Roy and Anne lived in Sauk Centre and raised five wonderful children and 10 grandchildren. Anne will be remembered most for her kindness, generosity, gentle spirit, beautiful smile and wonderful laugh, her cook books and of course her famous banana bread. She was truly an angel on earth.
She was a member of the American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary as well as St. Paul’s Catholic Church and a beloved member of the community.
Anne will be deeply missed by her husband, Roy; children, Brad (Carla) Walz of Andover, Vicki Pfeffer of Sauk Centre, Shelly Engle of Sauk Centre, Paul Walz of Andover, and Sarah (Josh) Trisko of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Alex, Max, (Brad), Brianna, Nick, Tayler (Vicki), Riley, Rykin (Shelly), Kayle, Ashton, Braelyn, (Sarah).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Margaret Foss; brother, John Foss; sister, Marie (Foss) Meyer; and son-in-law, Michael Pfeffer.
Serving as urn bearer will be Alex Walz. Cross bearer will be Brianna Cooper and scripture bearer will be Tayler Pfeffer. Honorary bearers will be Nick Pfeffer, Max Walz, Kayle Trisko, Ashton Trisko, Braelyn Trisko, Riley Engle and Rykin Engle.

Eugene “Gene” Boecker was born Nov. 27, 1955, in Sauk Centre to Norbert and Elizabeth Boecker.
Survivors include his three loving children, Travis, Brittney and Tiffany Boecker, three grandchildren, Isaac Hettver, Karly Boecker and Garrett Boecker, faithful companion dog Emmit, eleven siblings, Elmer (Juliana) Boecker, Ralph Boecker, Edmund (Helen) Boecker, Dorothy (Wilfred) Feldewerd, Rita (Gene) Revermann-Fischer, Janet (Maurice) Michels, Geri (LeRoy) Moscho, Lorraine Pommerer, Edna (Robert) Kramer, Allen (Val) Boecker and Tom (Angie) Boecker.
Mass of Christian Burial for Gene was held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 302 State Street, Elrosa, at 11 a.m. Presiding was Fr. Marvin Enneking and Fr. Peter Kirchner.
Wake Service was held on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to service on Feb. 2. Rosary was at 6 p.m. and parish prayers were at 7 p.m.
